The poorest of all hill tribes in Thailand, the Akha has a population of around 50,000. To an Akha, art is the adornment of everyday being and to wear it is to make a statement at once ethnic, personal and aesthetic. The harsh sunlight coupled with this lady’s heavily wrinkled skin portrays a life of hardship and perseverance.
